The revolutionary polymer-coated “capsule type” HPLC column with combined advantages of silica-based and polymer-based columns
OSAKA SODA CO., LTD. is a Japan-based chemical manufacturer.
Osaka-Soda™ is manufacturing ultra-shielded Capcell Pak UHPLC & HPLC-Columns based on proprietary silicone polymer coating technology. Previously, the columns belonged to the Shiseido™ Company, whose chromatography division was acquired by Osaka Soda in 2017. The technology of Capcell Pak columns combines the advantages of silica and polymer columns and reduces residual silanols which cause peak tailing. Capcell Pak columns are stable in pH range 1-10 and can be used under harsh mobile phases.

Reinforced homogeneous mono-layer polymer coating:
Capcell Pak columns provide reversed-phase, normal-phase and HILLC (Reverse of reversed-phase) modes ion-exchange separation modes. The following guide will help chromatographers to choose a suitable column that best fits their applications.
Silica packing materials, represented by octadecylsilyl (ODS-) silica and octylsilyl silica, have numerous features such as excellent pressure resistance and solvent resistance, high separation performance, wide sample range, and low column cost. But, it is known that C18 groups are hydolyzed in basic environments, and that silica itself dissolved into basic liquid. Therefore, conventional ODS columns’ mobile phase were limited to acidic or neutral.
By applying surface treatment technology that is cultivated in the research of powdery materials used for cosmetics, Shiseido successfully developed a novel polymercoated packing material (capsule) in 1985 (received the Chemical Technology Award from the Chemical Society of Japan). This technology features:
Capcell PAK
To consistently obtain stable analytical results from any lot anywhere in the world, CAPCELL PAK is subject to thorough quality control at each production process from choice of starting materials to shipping.
Most CAPCELL PAK columns are classified not only by application based on the Pharmaceutical Affairs Law of Japan but also by USP category from the United States Pharmacopeia. These columns support worldwide applications. Columns of stable quality are available at any time anywhere in the world and can be used for routine analysis.
